Your mental and physical journey

Before you set off for your African expedition you will be provided with a tailored mental and physical training guide to ensure you are set for success.

Will it be easy?

If it was easy, it wouldn't be called a challenge! You’ll struggle. You may even doubt why you ever started. There is no shortcut to success... sorry.

Will you succeed?

Your Mountain Guide

To complete your ascent of Kilimanjaro we have partnered with the leading operator - Kandoo Adventures.

Choosing to join forces with them was centred on the following two things:

1. There is no compromise on health and safety

2. There is no compromise on providing the best possible experience for guests

In fact, Kandoo are the only major operator who run everything themselves. There are no 'middle men'. They employ and train all their guides, buy all their own equipment, and run safety and quality systems to the very highest western standards. You really are in the very best hands.

Your Itinerary

DAY 1: ARRIVE KILIMANJARO AIRPORT

We will meet you at Kilimanjaro airport and transfer you to your pre-climb hotel, where you will attend a pre-climb briefing with your lead guide to prepare you for the challenge ahead.

DAY 2: MACHAME GATE TO MACHAME CAMP

Elevation: 1800m to 3000m, Distance: 11 km, Time: 5-7 hours, Habitat: Montane Forest

Our porters prepare and pack supplies and luggage before we start our ascent along the forest trail to Machame Camp.

DAY 3: MACHAME CAMP TO SHIRA CAMP

Elevation: 3000m to 3850m, Distance: 9 km, Time: 4-6 hours, Habitat: Moorland

After breakfast, we leave the rainforest behind and continue our ascent crossing a small valley and up to a steep rocky ridge. From there we follow a river gorge to Shira Camp.

DAY 4: SHIRA CAMP VIA LAVA TOWER TO BARRANCO CAMP

Elevation: 3850m to 4600m to 3950m, Distance: 12 km, Time: 6-7 hours, Habitat: Semi-desert

Today we will climb up to 4600m to the base of the Lava Tower for lunch and acclimatisation. This will be our toughest day so far and you may feel the altitude. After lunch we will descend again by almost 650m to Barranco Camp, following “walk high, sleep low” golden rule of acclimatisation.

Our descent to Barranco Camp takes about 2 hours and offers great opportunities to capture the beautiful Western Breach and Breach Wall.

DAY 5: BARRANCO CAMP TO KARANGA CAMP

Elevation: 3950m to 3930m, Distance: 5 km, Time: 4 hours, Habitat: Alpine Desert

A relatively short, but fun day, starting with a rock scramble to the top of the Great Barranco Wall. From there we traverse to the Karanga Valley (3930m) beneath the icefalls of the Heim, Kersten and Decken Glaciers. We will stay overnight at Karanga campsite.

DAY 6: KARANGA CAMP TO BARAFU CAMP

Elevation: 3930m to 4600m, Distance: 4 km, Time: 3 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert

We leave Karanga campsite behind to meet the junction connecting with the Mweka descent trail. From here we continue up to the Barafu Hut. You have now completed the Southern Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. At camp, we can rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are to be clearly seen from this position.

DAY 7: BARAFU CAMP TO SUMMIT TO MWEKA HUT

Elevation: 4600m to 5895m (and down to 3100m), Distance: 7 km ascent / 13 km descent, Time: 6-8 hours ascent / 7-8 hours descent, Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit

You will be woken at 23:30 with tea and biscuits. We start our trek to the summit between the Rebman and Ratzel glaciers up to Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging part of the trek. At Stella Point (5732m), we will stop for a short rest and hopefully be in time to witness a magnificent sunrise. From we will push on for an hour to the summit, Uhuru Peak (5895m), the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa.

From the summit, we descend down to the Mweka Hut camp site, via Barafu for lunch and a well-earned rest.

DAY 8: MWEKA CAMP TO MWEKA GATE

Elevation : 3100m to 1800m, Distance: 10 km, Time: 3-4 hours, Habitat: Forest

Your final day on the trek, departing after breakfast we descend a further 1300m to the Mweka Park Gate to pick up your summit certificates from the Park Headquarters. Transfer to your hotel for a celebration.

DAY 9: DEPART KILIMANJARO AIRPORT

We will collect you from your hotel and transfer you to Kilimanjaro Airport for your departing flight.

Food

Each day on the climb you will burn about 4000 calories which is almost double your normal intake. On summit night you will burn well over 6000 calories.

Staying hydrated and well-fed on your climb is absolutely vital, especially when the altitude can make you feel less like eating or drink as much as you should.

And you need fuel to climb!

For this reason, special menu plans have been put together that are appealing, healthy, and filled with all the energy you need to make it to the summit. All meals include fresh fruit and vegetables every day.

As a reward after your summit ascent, we'll have an "All Day English Breakfast" ready and waiting for you when you arrive back at Base Camp. And you will also get to try some of the local Tanzanian cuisine such as Njegere and Machalari.
